A

Adware - Adware is a form of ad serving software where the delivery of the ad is actually part of the software application. These ads can be displayed in multiple formats to include pop-ups, pop-unders, shapers, sliders and text-based links.

Banner - An Internet advertisement.

Brand - A brand is a name, term, design, symbol or any other feature that identifies a seller's goods or services.

Bundled - An arrangement in which one or more software programs are offered or included with another program for technical reasons or because of a business partnership.

C

Content - That which is contained; the thing or things included within specified limits; such as: the contents of a Web page.

Cookie - A mechanism for storing information — such as login information and passwords, or a user's previous activity on a site. Cookies in and of themselves are not harmful, and were originally developed to allow users to customize and personalize their Web experiences, and they continue to serve this purpose. Users may block the use of cookies by changing preferences in their Web browser, but this has the negative effect of blocking all cookies, rather than just weeding out the tracking cookies.

D

Download - To transfer programs from a server or host computer to one's own computer or device.

Drive-by Download - While not a piece of spyware itself, this misleading dialogue box serves as a gateway for the stealth installation of applications. In some cases, spyware can be installed even if the user does not choose the "yes" or "accept" button.

E

EULA - End User License Agreement; refers to the documentation and disclosure that accompanies software and explains the software functionality.

F

Flash Banner - An advertising banner stored in the Macromedia Flash format.

Fraud - A deception deliberately practiced in order to secure unfair or unlawful gain; trickery.

Freeware - Freeware is software that can be downloaded and shared at no cost. However, most freeware is copyrighted so programmers cannot use it in software they are developing. Adware is an advertising-supported version of freeware whose effects can range from benign advertisements into more threatening forms of spyware.

G

GUID - Acronym for globally unique identifier this unique code is used to identify a computer or file for tracking purposes.

H

HTML - Abbreviation for Hyper Text Markup Language, which is the computer language to make html or Web page files. HTML code refers to the HTML that makes up a Web site.

I

IP Address - A unique numeric sequence assigned to every computer on the Internet.

K

Keyword - A keyword is a word entered in a search command on the Internet.

L

Landing Page - A landing page is a highly expressive page between an advertisement and an advertiser's Web site that often provides product information. Some landing pages automatically jump to another page on the advertiser's Web site after a certain amount of time has elapsed.

M

Meta Tags - Meta tags are special HTML tags that provide information about a Web page. Unlike normal HTML tags, meta tags do not affect how the page is displayed in browsers.

O

Opt-in - An online process by which a user chooses to receive information (such as e-mail newsletters) or software, often by checking a box on a Web page or software installation screen.

Opt-in E-mail List - An e-mail mailing list where members have opted (chosen) to join. This is an alternative to spam, or unsolicited e-mail.

Opt-in/Opt-out - E-mail that you can opt-in (voluntarily ask to receive) and can later opt-out (ask not to be sent anymore).

Opt-out - An online process (such as unchecking a prechecked box) by which a user actively chooses not to receive information, such as e-mail newsletters or software.

P

Packet Sniffer - A software tool used to track the packets of information sent to and from a computer.

Permission Marketing - Permission marketing is marketing centered around customer consent to receive information.

PII - Acronym for personally identifiable information. This information refers to name, mailing, phone number, address or e-mail address.

Portal - A portal is a Web site that offers services to entice Internet surfers to use the site as their main point of entry to the Web.

Pop-up - A new window launched from a Web site or software.

Pop-under - A pop-up advertisement that loads in a new window behind the visitor's main or highlighted window (the window currently being used).

R

Rich Media Banner - A rich media banner is one that uses rich media instead of traditional JPEG or GIF images.

S

Search Engine - Tool or Web site used to search the entire Internet to pull up results based on the keywords.

Server - A server is a computer, or a software package, that provides a specific kind of service to client software running on other computers.

Shareware - Software that is distributed for free and on a trial basis. Users are encouraged or required to pay for the software after using it for a limited time. In some cases, the shareware is free but incomplete, and users may purchase a full version. In others, the software is complete and not time-limited.

Spam - Unsolicited commercial messages, such as spam e-mail.

Spider - A spider is a software program that crawls the Web, searching and indexing Web pages to create a database that can be easily searched by a search engine.

Spyware - Spyware is a software program that aids an unauthorized third party in gathering information about a user without his or her knowledge and consent, and can relay the information back to that unauthorized third party.

System Monitors/Keyloggers - System monitors are applications designed to monitor computer activity to various degrees. These programs can capture virtually everything a user does on his or her computer, including recording all keystrokes, e-mails, chat room conversations, Web sites visited and programs run. System monitors usually run in the background so that users do not know they are being monitored. The information gathered by the system monitor is stored on the computer in an encrypted log file for later retrieval. Some programs are capable of e-mailing the log files to another location.

T

Target Marketing - Target marketing is the selecting and developing of a number of offerings to meet the needs of specific market segments.

Text Link - A textual advertising link, not graphical (often found in search results).

U

Uninstaller - A program specifically written to remove a software program, most often included with the original program. Windows users can usually also uninstall programs through the Add/Remove Programs icon on their Control Panel.

URL - Abbreviation for Unified Resource Locator, which is used to find (locate) files (resources) on the Internet. Example of this can be Web addresses and IP addresses.

W

Web Bugs - A file, usually a small or invisible graphic image, that is placed on a Web page or in e-mail to allow a third party to monitor user behavior.
